Just days into her reign, the new Miss Wales, Sarah Fleming from Brecon, was guest of honour at a glittering London bash in order to raise funds for charity. Sarah, was whisked off to the five star hotel in Heathrow, by one of the UK’s leading care providers – Hallmark Healthcare – to take part in their annual awards ceremony. Sarah helped raise in excess of £1,500 for NAPA (National Organisation for Activities for Older People). For Sarah it was a great opportunity to start her fundraising campaign for 2006/7. She said:"I had a lovely evening. I was a little bit nervous getting up on stage to hand out all the awards, but everyone made me feel very welcome" Avnish Goyal, Hallmark Healthcare MD, regarded it a pleasure and honour to have Sarah’s company. He said:"We were delighted to have Sarah support during the evening. All the guests agreed she’ll have a great chance at Miss World. Seven of our award winners were from Wales too, so it was a great night for the Welsh"Dressed to thrill!
Sarah and the first and second runners up in Miss Wales 2006 – Lydija Vrcic and Jamie Williams – joined the Red Handed team for their first photoshoot with the men's glossy magazine. Charlie's Angels eat your heart out!Making road safety cool
Sarah has certainly been busy since becoming Miss Wales in July. She recently helped to launch a major road safety campaign after it was revealed a third of all those killed or seriously injured on Welsh roads in the last 10 years were under 25. Pass Plus Cymru aims to equip 17-25-years-olds with advanced driving skills in hazard anticipation, motorway driving, all-weather driving and much more. Those who complete the one-day course will be eligible for a discount on their car insurance. Sarah, who has just turned 17, will be learning to drive soon, she has already experienced first hand the heart-ache road traffic collisions can cause:"A friend recently passed his driving test and was nearly killed in a head-on crash soon after. He’s recovering but he’s got metal pins in his legs,” she explained. "I think PPC is a cool idea because it doesn’t preach to young people but involves them in a fun and practical way. It’s a great idea to take extra training after you’ve passed your test. I will definitely be doing the course when I’m eligible and I would encourage others to do the same." Miss Wales 1998 – Anna Bartley
Miss Wales 1997– Melanie Jones
It was a major honour for me to be crowned Miss Wales in 1997 and to represent my place of birth in the most coveted beauty award in Britain in the ‘Miss United Kingdom’ contest which was broadcast live on Sky 1 television and in which I was placed fourth. I am so glad and proud to have taken part in the Miss Wales competition as it has enabled me to meet so many wonderful people from all walks of life over the years. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the contestants all the very best of luck and success for the future.Miss Wales 1993 – Lisa Roberts
I entered Miss Cardiff in 1993, which took place in Coco Savanna’s nightclub. I won the title and was told on that night that I would be crowned Miss Wales. I was so excited as the event did not take place that year. I then went to the final of Miss UK which was amazing. We stayed at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London for five days where we rehearsed for the main night – doing dance routines and trying on expensive clothes which was brilliant. Best of all though, we all appeared on the Channel 4 Big Breakfast show which was amazing. I was glad to be a part of it, and I also got to meet Mrs Morley, the show organiser and some celebrity judges.Miss Wales 1984 – Jane Riley
Wining Miss Wales 1984 was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. It was a night and a year I will never forget. I was crowned at Thames Theatre in London live on Thames TV (ITV) along with Miss Scotland (May Monoghan) and Miss England (Louise Gray ). Both of whom have remained friends ever since! Representing my country in Miami to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, Japan in the Miss International Pageant and Germany in the Miss Europe pageant were honours! They were exciting and they led to modeling opportunities all over the world! I have lived in the US since 1986 and have modeled in NY, Atlanta, Chicago and more. I have judged several of the Miss USA State competitions. I have been married 18 years, I have two teenage sons and I continue to work in the industry. All thanks to Eric & Julia Morely and the entire Miss World organisation! I travel to Wales twice a year and it is still my home! I wish all of the past and future Miss Wales the very best experience possible.Miss Wales 1981– Sally Douglas Williams
Best wishes to the new organisers and to all the contestants in the Miss Wales 2004 contest. I had a wonderful year in my capacity as Miss Wales in 1981, travelling to Hong Kong, Japan, Canada and Morocco which led to a career in the travel industry. I will not be able to join you on 9 September but would like to wish you all a terrific evening.Miss Wales 1979 – Beverley Neals
As Miss Wales I had a great year travelling throughout the world promoting "beauty with a cause" with Miss England – Caroline Seaward and Miss Scotland – Lorraine Davidson. I was a finalist at Miss Universe in Perth Australia and went on to represent Britain in the Miss Young International pageant in the Philippines where I was placed in the top five. I moved to Los Angeles in 1981 and had a successful modelling and TV career. Entering Miss Wales opened many doors for me and was just the beginning of a fabulous career. I met my best friend, Lorraine Davidson – Miss Scotland '79. We are still very best friends to date, our families having just spent Christmas and New Year together. I recommend entering Miss Wales to any young girl with a good personality and a sense of adventure – it helps if you’re great looking!Miss Wales 1976 – Sian Adey-Jones
Sian(second from right) was Miss Wales in 1976, and a runner-up in the Miss World competition of that year.Miss Wales 1974 – Helen Morgan
Helen Morgan from Barry was the last Welsh woman to win the Miss World title. She is probably the most famous Miss World ever having chosen to give back the crown within three days of winning. Helen kindly gave up her time in 2004 to judge the Miss Wales event and to mark the 30th anniversary of her win.Miss Wales 1970 – Sandra Cater
Miss Wales 1969 – Shirley Jones
I won the Miss Caernarvon heat having entered my first competition as a dare. Winning the Miss Wales title was the start of many competitions and many trips abroad. However, in spite of many modelling offers I stuck to my career as a teacher of deaf children which I pursued for thirty years.Miss Wales 1964 – Veda Kathleen McCarthy
